Job Description

Job Summary:

The Office of Strategic Communication, UW-Madison's central communications and marketing arm, is seeking a versatile copywriter and detail-oriented copyeditor to join our team of talented professionals. Our charge as an office is to tell the story of UW-Madison and its impact on the world. This position will play a pivotal part in maintaining the high quality of our written products and ensuring they meet industry standards in tone, accuracy, and editorial style.

Your portfolio will reflect the range of needs in a modern, multifaceted marketing/communications office. You will write and maintain web copy for some of UW-Madison's highest-visibility websites, including the main home page (wisc.edu) and subpages. You will copyedit and post stories to the digital news website (news.wisc.edu). You will proofread campuswide e-newsletters and other major publications, including event programs and institutional reports. And you will manage content review on a regular interval for our websites, fact sheets, and other recurring materials to ensure all content remains accurate and relevant.

In this position, you will be asked to flex your copywriting skills to support the office's cross-functional work -- from SEO-friendly web content, to stylish ad copy, to formal executive communications. This position will also have the opportunity to pitch and write editorial stories for our publications. While we do not expect you to have robust professional experience across all of these writing applications, your materials should readily demonstrate your skills and versatility as a writer.

As a final set of eyes before our materials are published, you will also be responsible for copyediting and proofreading content produced by others. You will ensure that the work adheres to a consistent editorial style and high professional standard, reflective of an institution of higher education. Our office follows the AP Stylebook for editorial stories and the Chicago Manual of Style for most other publications. Familiarity with one of the style manuals is sufficient to be considered for this position, as demonstrated proficiency with one suggests that you will quickly pick up on the conventions of the other.
